It used to be that sending your kids to their bedroom was considered a punishment. These days, it's more likely to be a reward.

Kids' rooms have come a long way from the days when lava lamps, hanging beads and plastering the room with posters of David Cassidy or Farrah Fawcett was considered the height of coolness. Today, even a 2-yearold is apt to have his or her own flat-screen TV adorning the wall.

The biggest change over the years is that parents are now much more concerned about what goes into the decor of a child's room. They don't necessarily want a Disney room that clashes with the sophisticated furnishings of the rest of the house.

"A lot of people are choosing a decor with a very grown-up look. People are painting their kids' rooms taupe and beige, brown, black and white -very mature colour schemes," said Karen Weiner, owner and principal interior designer of Montrealbased Idealspace Design.
