How to Deodorize a fluval canister filter?

After moving to a new place I remembered that I left a fluval canister filter without cleaning it. After a week in that condition the filter smells of rotten waste. Anyone know if there's anyway to get rid of the smell?

Wash the heck out of it, maybe a bit of vinegar in the water and let it dry out.

It will be fine, but it will need to be cycled again from scratch.
