Can I put a 58mm filter on a 55mm lens?

I just got a Nikon D40 today, I bought a UV filter, too. The guy at Best Buy gave me a 58mm filter, but my lens is only 55mm.

It doesn't seem to fit, or am I just doing something wrong here?

*Edit* It is 52mm (after checking the question I have linked to below).. Look at the end of the lens to see what the thread size is (its the number next to a symbol that looks like a circle with a line through it)..
