Vermont bowhunters at a crossroad about crossbows

At the February meeting of the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Board, state wildlife officials gave a slide presentation on “Crossbow Hunting Today.” (Available online at www.vtfishandwildlife.com .) They did so at the request of the board, which last year received three petitions from individuals requesting that crossbows be legalized during the archery deer season.

Only physically impaired hunters with a special permit are allowed to use crossbows in Vermont, and in this regard Vermont is hardly alone. About two dozen states restrict the use of crossbows during archery season to disabled hunters, but the trend is clearly to allow all hunters to use crossbows during all deer seasons.
