Water plants to alter treatment

From Feb. 27 through April 2, the county of Johnston and town of Smithfield will stop using ammonia to disinfect their water-distribution systems. Once year for six weeks, state and federal rules require all public water systems to stop feeding ammonia and switch to chlorine only to ensure that no bacteria are present that might have adapted to ammonia. County and Smithfield customers undergoing kidney dialysis and owners of aquarium fish should be aware that the water will contain more chlorine for six weeks.
